The Department of Pesticide Regulations (DPR) extended the proposed review period for the four neonicotinoids to October 30.
Several agricultural groups asked for an extension, citing the “complexity of multiple [active ingredients], the diversity of affected commodities and the number of scientific studies”, and the large amount of data that needs to be considered. According to a letter from the trade group, the additional time will “provide room for more quality feedback.” They added that the proposed measures could have a significant impact on regulated communities.
DPR seeks to implement a series of proposed mitigation measures in California to restrict the use of four pesticides (products containing the active ingredients of imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, cobinine and ditifuran). The state stated that based on the reassessment of these products, “other mitigation measures are needed to protect pollinators from the use of neonicotinoids in crops, and it is developing mitigation measures in the form of regulations.”
Producers and industrial groups in the state worry that further restrictions on citrus will destroy citrus, grapefruit and cotton growers.
